Celebrating the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Founding
of the United Nations in San Francisco

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION

The founding of the United Nations in San Francisco is an important part of our cultural heritage. Some sixty years ago, as World War II was ending, delegates from fifty nations met here and laid the foundation for the United Nations. We are pleased to remember and commemorate that historic event.

The entire month of June has been proclaimed United Nations Month by San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom. From the first to the fifth of June, San Francisco will be the site of a major conference of mayors of the world 's largest cities, on the theme, Green Cities - Where the Future Lives! The conference will conclude on World Environment Day, June 5.

Later in June San Franciscans will celebrate Charter Day, the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the UN. The celebration will include four official programs and many related events.

Leading up to and following the June events, more than a hundred local, national, and international organizations will present cultural and educational programs throughout the Bay Area. UN60 Cultural and Educational Events outlines many of these activities, both official and unofficial. Look through these pages - find ways in which you can join in, become a UNA member at www.unausa.org, and look up your local UNA chapter, in San Francisco or elsewhere in Northern California!
